WATER PUMP LEAKAGE

HOW TO REMEDY DEFECT. To a certain extent the superiority of pump water circulation is offset by trouble sometimes experienced with leakage of water from the shaft packing glands of the pump. This is usually simple to remedy, however. Usually the shaft enters the pump through a large nut, and if this is tightened slightly the leakage will be stopped. The thread may be either right or left hand, according to the direction of rotation of the shaft, and in cases where the shaft passes right through the threads are in opposite directions ou the two ends of the pump. Extreme tightening of the gland nuts should be avoided, as it will wear the, shaft rapidly. If it appears to be necessary the packing is probably faulty and needs renewal. Special packing can be bought for a few pence from any accessory dealer, the non-metallic type usually giving best results. To instal it remove the gland nut and pull out the old packing, noticing in which direction it is wound on the shaft. Then wind on the new packing so that the nut can bo screwed in far enough to give it a good grip on the threads, but plenty of room is left for subsequent adjustment. Some pumps have automatic spring adjustment instead of a nut, but the general principle is the same. Use a heavy waterproof grease for pump lubrication. Lubricate moderately, or grease may be forced into the water, causing dirty accretions to form im ide the radiator tubes
