HARRIER RACING

WITH THE HASTINGS PACK ENJOYABLE RUN ON SATURDAY. HAVELOCK HILLS COVERED. A most enjoyable run was held by the members of the Hastings Harrier Chib on Saturday, there being a record attendance of twenty-one runners, including four new members. The run commenced from the Presbyterian Hall, Havelock North, the course covering over five miles of the hills. From the hall the trail led out on to the Te Mata road, round into Duart road and immediately into the hilly country. The trail Mowed the road for a fair distance and then branched off into the country, the course taking in much stiff hill work. After a time the trail led up past the reservoii- and across the hills in a southerly direction, the trail taking on more of an aspect of mountaineering than harrier racing. Several very precipitous grades were encountered, sometimes necessitating travelling on all fours. After considerable hill work the trail led out on to the road, following round past the two colleges. After coming to a blind end the trail crossed over paddocks to Lucknow road and eventually out on to the Middle road at the south end of the village. Here the trail was lost by the majority of the runners, who led straight through the village back to the hall. The few who kept to the trail in its entirety continued across sections, over the Pukahu road and round past the football ground, crossing the Havelock road and across into Napier road past the back of the post office, along this road past the front of the church and thence round to the hall where the run had commenced. The trail-layers left at 2.33 p.m., the slow pack setting out at 2.40 p.m., followed by the intermediate pack at 2.45 p.m. and the fast pack at 2.49 p.m. The trail-layers arrived home at 3.20 p.m., the first Tunner getting in two minutes later at 3.22 p.m. The placiugs of the packs were as follows:— FAST PACK. Waugh at a sumptuous afternoon tea at the manse, provided by Airs Waugh and lady helpers. This was much appreciated by the runners after their strenuous run, and at the conclusion a hearty vote of thanks to the host and hostess was enthusiastically carried with acclamation. Next week the run will be from Beatson Park, the trail-layers being V. Spackman and H. Shirley. At the usual meeting after the run, the Rev. R. Waugh was unanimously elected a vice-president of the club, a position which he accepted with thanks.
