MEAT EXPORT TRADE

GREATER PRODUCTION. REGULATED SHIPMENTS. Mr David Jones, chairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, in reviewing the current meat export season, shows that the export killing figures for the Dominion this season from Ist October up to 15th May show a considerable increase over last year’s figures for the same period. The increases are: Wethers, 211,028; ewes, 684.458; lambs, 810,533. The board has given much thought and care, said Mr Jones, to its work of regulating shipments and the arrivals of meat cargoes in the United Kingdom have been very regular this season, and have been well distributed throughout, each month. "It may be noted from the stocks in store in the Dominion as at 15th May.’’ he said, “that, although we have killed up. to the 15th May 1.706,019 more sheep and lambs this season than up to the same point last season, a fair proportion of this increase has been shipped up to date.” He then quoted returns of stocks in store in the Dominion as follows:—

"Looking at the position from the point, of view of New Zealand lamb arrivals in the United Kingdom, particularly having regard to the increased kill of 810,533 lambs,” Mr Jones added, "the quantity of our new season’s lamb to arrive Home up to the end of May this year will amount to 4.329,257 carcases, as compared with 3,986,608 for the same period last season—an increase of 342,649 lambs, which is not excessive.

"It is not possible to ascertain the actual quantity of lambs in store in the United Kingdom, but it is estimated that the total lambs from all sources in store at Ist June y»ill not exceed last year’s. figures at tho same date. It will bo understood that wo arc now on to the peak months of consumption in the United Kingdom.”
