NO REPLY TO ULTIMATUM. Shanghai, Jan. 25. The Japanese Consul-General paid a final call on the Chinese authorities this afternoon relative to the ultimatum, which does not contain a time limit. It was stated this morning that if a satisfactory reply was not given in a reasonable period the Japanese proposed to take action. Developments in the Shanghai hinterland suggest that the Chinese are preparing to offer the stoutest possible resistance in an endeavour to take over the native districts.
