THE ISLAND SERVICE

WITHDRAWAL OF TOFUA. ANNOUNCEMENT BY COMPANY. Wellington, Jan. 25. The Union Steam Ship Company announces that the island passenger steamer Tofua is to be withdrawn from the service after her trip in March. It is understood that a cargo steamer, probably the Waapahi, will maintain a regular monthly service in place of that now run bv the Tofua. The decrease in the passenger traffic between Auckland and the islands is the reason for the withdrawal of th® Tofua. This falling away is due not only to the present depression, which has affected all passenger services, but also to competition. The Aorangi and the Niagara provide a four weekly service between Auckland and Suva, and with the added competition the number of passengers travelling by the Tofua has dropped to such ah extent that the Union Company has now decided to withdraw her and substitute a cargo steamer.
