RISING IN EL SALVADOR

DESPATCH OF WARSHIPS. Washington, Jan. 23. A Communist revolutionary movement of serious proportions in El Salvador led to-day to the despatch of British, Canadian and American vessels for the protection of the lives of foreign residents. The United States Charge d’Affaires, Mr McCafferty, informed the State Department that the Italian ConsulGeneral had appealed for the protection of his nationals and the British Charge d’Affairs had concurred in the view that the despatch of naval vessels to the scene might prevent “much bloodshed”. The United States has ordered a cruiser and two destroyers to Acajugia or adjacent port. The British Embassy and the Canadian legation informed the State Department that a British cruiser was proceeding to El Salvador and two Canadian destroyers which were near there had put in to Acajugia. Fighting is reported in the cities of Santa Tecla and Sonsonati, where the railway is reported to have been torn up by Communists.
