Violent ’Quakes
VOLCANO ERUPTS HEAVY DAMAGE FEARED GUATEMALA AND NICARAGUA. POPULACE TERRIFIED New Yrrk, January 23. A message from San Salvador states that the Guatemalan volcano Auga erupted with sharp detonations, which were heard at San Salvador, where the populace rushed into the streets praying and carrying images. The superstitious were particularly terrified, due to the tact that January 21 commemorates the centenary of the famous eruption of Coseguina, in Nicaragua. Ashes are still falling from the Mexican frontier to Nicaragua. Santa Ana city is reported coverc to a depth of 50U quintals to the acre. Antiguans aro wading kuce-deep in a heavy fall of ashes close to tho volva noes, where they are one metre deep , some sections, destroying ail coffee and other crops. Tho earth is also said to be badly cracked in the affected area. A message from Guatemala City states that disrupted communications prevent tho reception of detailed information, but it is feared great damage was done by a sudden eruption 30 miles from Guatemala City of tho volcanoes li'uego and Acatenango. The towns of Antigua, Santa Lucia and Costzumalhuara, as well as several smaller communities, are reported to bo destroyed. Tho entire Republic of Guatemala was terrified by a series of earthquakes, ten of which were violent. They were centred in the vicinity of Zacatepe - quezo. These were followed by approximately 50 further shocks. Dense clouds of smoke filled with fiery streaks ol ashes shot from volcanoes and were earned by the wind as far as Salvador. Street and roof-tops in San Salvador City were covered with ashes. Tho shocks have now apparently ceased, but the citizens arc still much alarmed.
