TRADE WITH CANADA

MANUFACTURING INTERESTS. NECESSITY OF CONSERVATION. Representations are to be made to the Cabinet by the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association urging the necessity of conserving the interests of New Zealand manufacturers in the trade negotiations with Canada. A decision to this effect was made by the association at a meeting on Monday, on the motion of the president, Mr. S. Takle. It was decided further to invite the Minister of Finance and Customs, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, to confer with members prior to leaving Auckland on December 15 for Honolulu, where he will meet the Canadian Minister of Trade and Customs, Mr. H. H. Stevens. Mr. Takle remarked that the subject of reciprocal trade with Canada was one of first importance to manufacturers, and the opportunity of a discussion with Mr. Stewart should be taken. Mr. Takle moved that the association should urge the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation to impress on the Cabinet the need to conserve New Zealand manufacturing interests. The motion was seconded by Mr. G. Finn and caried unanimously.
