BOXING

PALMER DEFEATS O’MALLEY. A DISAPPOINTING DISPLAY Wellington, Dec. 7. Ambrose Palmer, middleweight boxing champion of Australia, lived up to his nickname of “Tiger” at the Winter Show Stadium to-night, when he gave Jack O’Malley, heavyweight champion of the Commonwealth, a boxing lesson. The contest went the full 15 rounds, but there was only one man in it and Palmer, boxing cleverly, won practically every round. Though only weighing list 111 b to O’Malley’s 12st 101 b, Palmer did most of the leading and early opened a gash over O’Malley’s right eye with a left hook. O’Malley was far too slow, it was a disappointing display for two Australian title holders. OPEN-AIR MATCH AT McLEAN PARK. LECKIE AND HUGHES Thursday next, with good weather, should see one of the biggest gates McLean Park has seen for some time. If one were to look tluough the whole list of boxers, Australian and New Zealand, one could not select a better contest than Leckie and Hughes, and it should be a red-letter day in the history of boxing in Hawke’s Bay. The programme is attractive in eveiy way. Music till 7.55, then an address by the Rev.
