SPEARFUL WINS THE CUP STEWARDS’ TO CIMABUE Christchurch. November 7. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s metro politan meeting opened to-day in glorious weather. The track was very fast after the prolonged dry weather and the attendance was good. The totalisator handled £34,417 compared with £48,674 10s for the first day last year. Going along the back Charmaine and Ephialtes were in command with Red Racer, Martian Chief and Spearful next. Ephialtes led crossing the top, followed by Red Racer. Gay Crest, Martian Chief, Mount Boa and Royal Love. Gay Crest took charge at the false rail with Admiral Drake, Compris, and Spearful close up. T n the run home Spearful beat Admiral Drake by half a length, Gay Crest being half a length away third, Jaloux was fourth, Time 3.24 4-5, WELCOME STAKES 1 Lack (R. When the course proper was reached Lack was the leader with La Moderne, Inflation and Oratorious, and Drum Fire the most prominent of the remainder. The leaders into the straight were Azalea, Rossferry, Filosol, Barbacan and Jason’s Quest, and the first named stayed on and won by a neck from Barbnean, with Filosol two lengths away third. Golden Wings and Croupier were caught by Cimabue before the post was reached for the last named to win by a neck from Golden Wings, with Croupier a similar distance away third. Red Heckle was fourth. Time, 1.11. RICCARTON HANDICAP. 2 King Colossus (B. H. Morris) .. 1 1 Gibraltar (A. E. Ellis) .. .. 2 5 Atholspear (Barry) 3 Also ran: 3 Desert Song, 9 Rational 11., 7 Full Mark, 4 Ravine, 6 Minerva], 8 Topere, 10 Night Parade, 11 Cape Gold. Desert Song led into the straight from King Colossus, Rational 11. and Minerval. King Colossus finished well and won by two lengths from Gibraltar, with Atholspear a neck away third. Ravine was fourth. Time, 1.52 1-5.
