MATCH WITH NORFOLK UNEVEN BATTING. DEMPSTER JUST MISSES CENTURY. (Received 21, 11.45 a.m.) Norwich, Aug. 20. The New Zealand cricketers’ batting against Norfolk was somewhat uneven. Dempster and Talbot added 86 for the fifth wicket. The former, despite lack of practice, maintained a magnificent defence. He was also quick to score from any loose deliveries, particularly on the leg side. He appeared set for his century when he was bowled off the pads. He batted for 190 minutes, and hit seven fours. Talbot batted steadily. He was caught by the wicketkeeper. Matheson played, a forcing game. He was occasionally lucky, but his innings was highly valuable. The bowling was never dangerous, although the wind enabled Eagle and Roughtrought to swing the ball. The weather in the afternoon turned wintry. Norfolk batted for 45 minutes. Matheson wore a sweater when bowling. He dismissed Falcoln with a ball which left the pitch like lightning. Stumps were drawn half an hour early owing to rain. Details: — NEW ZEALAND. First Innings.
