. TRIAL OF ITALIAN ATTEMPT ON PRINCE UMBERTO’S LIFE. "UNLUCKY STATE OF MY COUNTRY.” lUnltsd Press AssocUtloa-B* Cabl»~ OoprrichLl (Received 26, 12.40 n.m.) BrtMMH, Sept. 25, The trial has begun of a 22-yeara-old Italian, Fernando De Rosa, for attempting to kill Prince Umberto, heir to the Italian throne, last December. There was a remarkable scene when he explained to the President how he became anti-Fascist. When twelve years old he was given a pistol and while playing with it he accidentally killed a comrade. The event impressed him and it occurred to him that those who gave revolvers to children were bandits. He spoke for an hour and criticised Signoi Mussolini. Dealing with the shooting the prisoner said he acted in a machinelike manner. Ho selected a spot and when he saw the Prince rushed from the crowd ho fired. “I expected the people to scamper as they do in ttalv when a shot is fired,” he said. "I acted because I wished to attract the attention of Europe to the unlucky state of my country.” There are 17 witnesses for the defence.
