HELP TO BEAUTIFY HASTINGS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Now and again we read in your paper letters about the beauty and progress of Hastings which is quite in order, because for the size of the town Hastings is really beautiful. There are hundreds of very nice gardens here and I wonder bow many of the owners ~know that there is a garden competition in Hastings. The Horticultural Society is a struggling one and does not get the support it should and there was a meeting last night which was to discuss thinsg in general and only about a dozen and a-half folks turned up. One thine which received a great deal of attention was this garden competition. A man in Hastings most keenly interested in gardens has donated cups, for two years now, to encoutage those amateur gardeners to do their best and make good gardens even better. The society has stood a small loss of a few pounds each time, not that it is growling, but a loss is a loss even to this poor struggling society, and what we ask for is more entries in this section. Last year only 17 entries were received and surely there are more than 17 good gardens in the town of Hastings. People have an idea that this means a garden without weeds. But that is not so, because gardens are almost impossible to help perfect in that respect. Will persons interested in this kindly attend the next general meeting. Then, perhaps, we may get more entries and thus bring our competitions up to the standard of those run in Wellington andincidcntly bring about a better and more beautiful town. —Yours, etc., KEEN GARDENER. Hastings, 26/6/30.
