EXPORT FRUIT CASES.
(To The Editor.) Sir, —I have followed the correspondence on the above question with some interest, and feel constrained to answer- a few of the thoughtless accusations made by your correspondent “Local Industry’’ against fruitgrowers. Fruitgrowing, unlike many branches of farming in New Zealand, has many peculiar difficulties as regards pests, which compel them to expend much time and money in spray material and machinery. ' Having had the privilege of meeting and speaking to many of the growers in this district, I have no hesitation in stating that a more patriotic body of men would be impossible to find. Should the British manufacturer produce material and machinery equal to the high state of efficiency required to-day, tlie growers to a man would support them. It is regretable to have to admit that British manufacturers do not as yet “supply the goods,” and until they do, we must use the goods that “do give results.” Now, a few words to “Local Industry” on the question which seems to hurt him very much, i.e., export fruit cases. To-day is one of keen competition and specialisation, and if “Local Industry” is making cases, let him make the best case that was ever made. He candidly admits in his letter that the New Zealand article is not so consistently as good as th© imported. My earnest advice to him is keep out of the paper such reports, and use his energies in providing cases second to none. Don’t complain, “Jxical Industry,” but get busy and “deliver the goods.”—l am, etc., JONATHAN. Hastings, 27/6/30. (
