WINTER RACING

NAPIER PARK CLUB SUCCESSFUL FIRST DAY. tote figures show increase. The Napier Park Racing Club was favoured with beautiful weather for the opening of its Winter Meeting at GreeumeaUows yesterday, and a fairly large crowd'was treated'to an excellent afternoon’s sport. The totalisator investments showed an improvement on the first day of the Winter Meeting of last year, the machine handling £9060 as compared with £8096, an increase of £96-1. Late results:— STEWARDS’ STAKES. Of 150 sovs; 1 mile.' 4 Mr C. E. Haldane’s ch g Queen's Choice, by Clarenceux—Novoe Vremya, 6yrs( I. Green), 9.9 1 7 Mr E. H. Whiteman’s b g Paiko (H. Whakaari got away best from Queen’s Choice, Goblin Market, Paiko and Balloon, but as they reached the back Goblin Market took up the running from Queen’s Choice, Whakaari, Paiko, Moutoa Treasury, and Rory Mor. There was practically no change at the hal'-mile, but as they turned for home Goblin Market was just clear of Paiko, Queen's Choice, Rory Mor, Mountain Heath, Moutoa Treasury and Balloon. A great race to the post eventuated, Queen’s Choice getting the verdict by half a neck from Paiko, with Rory Mor half a head back third. Courageous, was fourth. Time, 1.42 2-5. SETTLERS’ HACK HANDICAP, Of 125 sovs; 7 furlongs. 3 Mr T. C. Kecblo’s ch g Adventus, by Bisogne—Footstep, 3yrs (R. Reed), 9.7 1 2 Mr G. Chaffey’s blk g Tahoma, (C. Broughton), 9.11 2 7 Air F. Adventus began best from Cloyne, Goldlike and Royal Songster, but at the end of two furlongs Royal Songster bad charge from Cloyne, Lordhke, Spearform and Goldlike. At the five furlong post Goldlike ran into third position, the order at the home turn being Royal Songster, Goldlike. Spearform Tahoma, Adventus Lordlike and Cloyne. Adventus and Tahoma came through nicely in the straight to fight out a great finish, Adventus getting home by a neck from Tahoma, with Mirabiliary close up third. Time, 1.29 3-5. "Mothplane was fourth, GENERAL NOTES Owners and trainers whose horses have engagements at the Wellington winter meeting should bear in mind that acceptances for all first day events, and also for the Winter Hurdles (run on the third day), close on Monday, at 9 p.m. • • » The Auckland hurdle horseman J. Sharkey lias fully recovered from the accident that befel him when Q r.ucoma came to grief in the Kingsland Hurdle Race at Avondale. He Ims been engaged to ride Mountain Guide at Waipa to-day. • • • • Another Ellerslie jockey, 71. McTavish, who usually rides for J. Williamson’s stable, will not bo at Te Awamutu to-day. He has been indisposed since the Great Northern fixture, but is making a good recovery. • «» * The well performed six-year-old Romeo—Penella mare Flying Juliet, who was retired from racing after the Taumarunui meeting, is to be mated with Acre, who is now stationed at Mr. Jas. Thorpe’s stud at Te Rapa. • » a The Cornwall Handicap winner, True Blood, Helium and Kahakura are engaged at the Wellington meeting, and at the present time it is the intention of their owner, Mr. W. Scholium, to take them to Trentham. ♦ » a Until last week tho Australianbred four-year-old gelding The Warden, by The Verderer, had been out of sight' since racing at Wanganui last February. However, he was elected favourite for the Waihnu Hack Handicap at Hawera on ’Wednesday last and duly “brought home tho bacon.” » * » Mr. H. McManaway’s three-year-old filly Habit, half-sister by Thespian to Rational, The Monk, Lady Isinglass, and Mask, returned to New Zealand by the Ulimaroa this week. She was a winner of one race at short- odds in New .South Wales, but several failures must have made the trip an expensive one for connections.

Generally acknowledged to be the bestdooking youngster seen at Ellerslie for many years, says the Auckland “Sun,” is Dr. W. C. Ring’s colt, purchased at the Randwick yearling sales at Easter. Dr. Ring lias registered the name of Bronze Eagle for this rising two-year-old. The colt is by Brazen (by Phalaris) from the Australian mare, Torfrida.

'•• a a To all outward appearances, says a Waikato correspondent, Wiltshire has got over the damage to his loreleg which he sustained while preparing for his Great Northern engagements. The Day Comet—Lady Lobelia gelding is running out in the paddock at his owner's place at Te Rapa. It is not definite yet whether he will be got ready for tho Grand National fixture, but this does not seem a likely decision.

By winning the Waverley Handicap at Hawera, Gowanlea recorded his first, success. Se is a three-year-old gelding by Sheffield from Peggy Paul, therefore a half-brother to that good sprinter Broad Acre. Gowanlea, who is trained by J. Fryer at Hawera, is engaged in hack events at the Wellington winter meeting to be held at Trentham next month.

Amorist will represent. R. Longley’s stable in hurdle events at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting next month. Se showed attractive form when he won at the Dunedin meeting a few weeks ago, and since then he is reported as training on well. He is a dashing jumper, and ho gave a high-class exhibition in a school over four hurdles this week, With average luck he should improve his record on the Trentham trip

Word has been received from Hawera that Mendip is getting through his work at that centre in attractive style. The Bisogne gelding will contest the principal Hat races at the Wellington winter meeting, and is expected to run prominently in his engagements at that fixture. H. Gray has been engaged to ride Mendip at Trentham and the combination is likely to command strong support.

By Day Comet from a Spalpeen mare reads like something that should take to jumping as a duck to water. That, is the breeding of a solid stamp of five-year-old gelding who is receiving his preparation from R. Syme at To Rapa and who has been named The Roadman. He is to race in the interests of Messis. H. W. and T. C. Wilson, and has been schooled over brush fences, jumping well.

a a » The well-known trotter Petqr McKinney was on the market for sale at 60 guineas any time before the start of the Stewards’ Handicap at the A.T.C.’s recent meeting. Nobody wanted him even at this price, so it was his old owner that pocketed tho 280 sovs. he won. There seems to bo nothing like selling, or offering to sell, to make a horso put his best foot forward.

Prior to the Egmont-W’anganui Hunt racing meeting, the Antagonist —Generosity gelding Annoyer changed hands, Mr. W. D. Graham purchasing him from his late owner, Mr. G. E. Clout, and presenting the gelding to Mrs. Graham, in whose colours Annoyer ran twice during the day, finishing close up third on one occasion. It is understood tho horse may in future be trained by E. George.

a a According to a Waikato exchange, Star Comet and Pompeius will qot bo seen out at the Wellington meeting. Dissatisfaction has been expressed with the weights Mr. H. Coyle has given these jumpers from I’. Brady's stable for the opening day. Star Comet had been working well rtt Te Rapa, which indicated that he was rapidly coming back to his best again, following the setback to his breathing that caused his withdrawal from his Great Northern engagements.

The five-year-old Ixiighton—Catalin i gelding Paleta was brilliant as a two-year-old, being unplaced .only in his first race out of five starts, while ho won the other four. As a three-year-old he started on a similar number of occasions, his only success being in the Great Northern Guineas, after being second in the Hawke's Bay Guineas, Doree beating him by a head. He went amiss and was not raced last season. In fact, he did not sport silk again until the Egmont winter meeting last month. Paleta has shown in his outings since then that lie was coming back to form and last Wednesday he won the Flying Handicap at Hawera. Paleta is engaged at the Wellington meeting, and now that he is about at his best again he may be hard to beat there.

Mention was made in these columns on 16th June, says Thursday’s Wellington “Post,” that Conjuror 11. was trained by E. Murtagh, and a subsequent paragraph read: “It is stated that Conjuror 11. at Trentham is trained by his owner, Mr. C. Boyle, of Wellington. On occasional trips to Trentham, ‘The Post’s’ representative has not noticed an aerial or earphones as part of Conjuror’s gear. Still, neither Cinquevalli nor Nikola gave away their best’tricks.” It has been represented to us that the statements in the paragraphs are incorrect, and we are assured that the horse has no other trainer than his owner, Mr. Boyle. In accepting this assurance, we desire to give publicity to the correction, and io express regret ihtit a mistake was made.

Son o’ Mine, who won ihe Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase at Hawera after accounting for the Hunters’" Hurdle Race, was trained by F. Davis for Mr. Eliot Davis in Auckland some seasons ago. Subsequently he ran in F. Davis’s own nomination, winning one race for him. Then, sold to Mr. G. E. Trevor two seasons ago he showed promise over steeples by running third in the Hack Steeplechase and third in the Adamson Steeplechase at Egmont. while he occupied similar positions in the Hack Steeplechase and the Grandstand Steeplechase at Wanganui. Last season ho failed to get into the money in half a dozen starts, lie did not make his reappearance

till Wednesday last. He was bred try Mr. T. H. Lowry, being by Finland from Lovelock, by Martian from Lovelorn, the dam of -Menelaus (N.Z, Cup winner), Nones, Prince Paladin and others. His recent successes vrere gamed for the Hawera trainer, J. Brown, to whom he was presented as a hack by Mr. Trevor. Brown means to pass on to the donor the £5O gold cup trophy attached to the cross-country event.
