GAME FULL OF INTEREST J. RURU IN GREAT FORM The main Rugby attraction in Hawke’s Bay this afternoon was the inter-collcgo match between Napier High School and Te Aute College. In a game brimful of interest the holders of the Moascar Cup defeated the local boys by 18 to 3. The first spell was very oven, School having the advantage of tho wind, but on changing over the superior combination of the College backs, together with tho brilliancy of J. Ruru, caused havoc among School, whose backs became bustled, and made many foolish mistak os. The teams were as follows:— Te Aute—Thompson, Kihi. J. Ruru, Goldsmith, E. Ruru. Reedy, Te Ngaio, Tipoki, Turei, Paerata, 8. Whaanga. Smith, Tipple, McClutchie and li. Whaanga. High School.—H. P. Brady. C. Sutherland. A. W Beck, E. Gagahen. C. Le Quesne, H. Evans. B. J. Mahoney (Capt.), L. G. Hannah. L. Dugelby, W. M. Miller, 1. H. Montgomery. H. E. Heaney, M. Greville, A. Bennett, H. Allen. Play settled down on the half-way where, from a line-out, the Te Aute bucks secured but their movements lost territory. The school forwards, led by Heaney and Allen, carried play to the twenty-five, where they set their backs going. A dropped pass gave J. Ruru a chance to secure possession, and he transferred to Kihi, who made a greuti break until brilliantly tackled by Brady. In the resulting melee the school forwards broke away in a great rush, the Te Aute backs being property bustled. A short, lively 'struggle on the goal-line near the posts ended in Thompson making a hasty force down. For a time School held a territorial advantage, but a penalty kick olaced them past the quarterwav. From here Evans made a promising break but his pass in-field went astray. The forwards took nlay to the corner where Smith found the line. Sciiool kept up the pressure and Beck narrowly missed a good penalty goal. The forwards on both sides were playing a willing game and striving hard to open up the play, but the determined tacaling and bustling tactics were a big obstacle Hannah and Greville were putting in sound work. Te Ngaio started a great burst which enilol in Thompson hauling down Whaanga and Beck clearing with a splendid kick into touch near half-way where pay remained for a time. Whaanga set Te Aute on a great attack, the forwards carrying play to within ten yards of the posts. Two scrums resulted, then J. Ruru, Whaanga and Tipoki Induged in a little in mid out passing for the last-named to almost get over. The Collegians lost no time in gaining the quarter-way from where they gave the backs the ball. However, the School forwards wore bustling well and the Collegians fell back a little Thompson took a difficult free-kick at the sticks and just missing equalising tho scores, the ball striking the cross-bar and rebounding into play for School to find the line at the twenty-five way flag. An exchange of kicks favoured School but the Te Aute forwards made good use of their weight and pushed the School serummagers off the bah to start the backs going. A pretty piece of in and out nippy passing was mullified by the sound tackling of School. There was considerable kicking and both full-backs, Brady and Thompson figured prominently. For some time play had wavered on the school side of halfway and on the call of the interval Te Aute were about to launch another attack with the score reading High School 3 Te Aute College 0 AFTER THE INTERVAL. However School were not to be denied, and continued to exert the pressure in the front division. They foolishly attempted to open up, but School backs handled the ball cleanly, and Te Aute quickly smothered their efforts to pass, and play fell back to neutral territory. To Aute wore about to take up the offensive when they were stopped by a free kick still they were not to be denied, and a good run by Rehi placed Te Aute near tho corner flag. Play went across field, Te Aute giving way near the quarter way, wlie o in a scrum School were awarded a free kick. This availed them little, for To Aute were quickly on the attack again. From a lino out on the right wing the ball came out through all the College backs to Goldsmith on tho wing, who put in a pretty run to score near the corner. Thompson just failed to convert. The second XV.’s of the tw’o schools met in a curtain-raiser to the senior fixture. The play was interesting and open. School had the wind behind them and had the bettor of the first spell. After play had raced up and downfield at a fast clip, McKinnon opened with a pretty try, which Stephenson converted. The Collegians made every efford to even up matters, but it was not until nearly tho encl of the spell that Niwa crossed in the corner as the result of a passing bout. He failed to convert. 11 With two points to make up Te Aute opened the second spell with a series of passing rushes, one of these movements ending in Tonga scoring near the corner flag.
