MID-WEEK COMPETITION FAST AND CLOSE GAMES. Two interesting games were played at Cornwall Park on Wednesday after noon in furtherance of the mid-week competitions. Waimarama defeated Diamond R after a close and hard fought game by 4 goals to 1, and United White played a fast and exciting match with Karori, which they won by 3 goals to 1. DIAMOND Pl 1 v. WAIMARAMA 4. Diamond R won the toss and bullied off with the wind at their backs. Waimarama soon got busy, hut cleared with a side-line shot. A sortie by Diamond broke down through offside play, but still pressing they crowded the goalie who saved by bitting behind. Diamond were awarded several penalty corners, but failed to gain any advantage. Waimarama at last got clear and a pretty piece of work saw them score. Both teams came back strongly on the attack, but the Diamond backs, failing to get the hall away, let the speedy native forwards in again and Miller only saved in the nick of time. Diamond came away with a rush, the ball being handled by all the forwards. Stitt had a shot, but it hit the post and half-time sounded with no further addition to the score.

On the change over Diamond, at cnco set. to work to oven up matters. Brown had a shot which found the not, but the referee awarded a penalty for sticks. Waimarama came away with a forward rush which completely beat the Diamond back line and resulted in a score. Another rush immediately after the bully gave them a further score. Diamond were feeling the effects of a hard game and Waimarama kept them very busy on the defensive. However, they rose to the occasion a little later and ' took the ball through to score their first goal. The natives wore too strong, and from a rally in which the forwards showed nice combination. Rusty beat the backs and found the net. The referee ruled “no score ■' on account of the ball failing to be hit in the circle. 'Waimarama were now getting, much the better of the game, and from another sweeping rush they scored. Diamond R tried their utmost to increase their score, but the Waimarama defence was too strong and a very fine game ended with Waimarama the winners by 4 goals to 1. Messrs Matthews and Giles were referees. UNITED WHITE 3 v. KARORI 1. The above teams provided a very fast and interesting game. Fitzmaurice was the first to open up the score. A little later Rouse took the ball to the circle. The United goalie saved, but from the rebound off his pads Grcnside found the net. The score was unchanged when the whistle blew for half time. The second spell opened up at n great, bat with Karori on the attack, several, good chances being lost through hard luck. From a bully off Fitzmaurice gained possession and scored a beautiful goal. Karori sought to even matters, but the United goalie was playing a safe game. The United forwards then secured. McNab centered to McKee to Fitzmauriee who again found the net. From then on Karori were on the attack, but they could not penetrate the United defence and when the whistle went, the score still read: United White 3, Karori 1. Messrs Startup and Lewis were referees. HASTINGS LADIES 7 v. lONA2. Hastings Ladies proved too strong for lona and after an interesting game defeated them by 7 goals to 3. FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY.
