RUGBY FOOTBALL

TO-MORROW’S MATCHES BRITAIN v. COMBINED TEAM. VISITORS’ SELECTION. Timaru, June 26. The members of the British Rugby team arrived from Invercargill tins afternoon and were accorded a civic reception. Responding to the welcome, Mr. James Baxter said that when the team passed through Timaru on the way south they were fascinated with Timaru and had decided to stay here until Wednesday afternoon next. The team was going through to Christchurch at the last possible moment. Eight members of the party who went to the Hermitage, Mount Cook, on Monday returned to-night. All are well pleased with the trip. A further eight members leave for the Hermitage to-morrow. The British team to meet Ashburton, South Canterbury and North Otago on Saturday is as follow:— Full-back: J. Bassett. Three-quarters: J. Morley, A. L. Novis, J Jennings, T. Jones-Davies. Fly-half: H. M. Bowcott. Scrum-half: N. Poole. Front row: F. Rew, S. Martindale and H. C. Jones. Middle row; B. Black and J. Hodgson. Back row: Ivor Jones, F. D. Prentice and W. B. Welsh. TOO MANY RUCBY RULES. Wellington, June 26. “We are called on to make far too many definitions. The game is becoming over-governed,” said Mr. S. S. Dean, chairman of the New Zealand Rugbv Union, at last evening’s meeting, when two requests for rulings were received from the New Zealand Rugby Referees’ Association. The rulings requested were:— (1) In all cases of kicks being taken in penalty awards, can the opposing players be lined up passive on the mark, charge immediately the bail is kicked, or must they remain missive until the ball has passed Ihem? As an answer to this it was suggested that if the kick was finished, and if the ball was on its downward flight, the players could charge; if not, they must remain passive until the ball had passed them. The union considered this was a question calling more for common sense than a definite ruling, and decline to give a definition. (2) A defending player kicks the ball oyer his own goal-line and an attacking player, in attempting to pick un the ball with a view to touching down behind the posts, kicks the ball over the dead ball line, what decision should he given? The union decided that a drop out at the twenty-five should be awarded. SATURDAY'S GAMES IN HASTINGi AND NAPIER. No senior cup games will be played in Hastings and Napier to-morrow afternoon, on qcount of the Hawke’s Bay representatives being at Carterton. Then, again, the HastingsNapier representative team will be at Wairoa.. Napier fans, however, should be well catered for by the inter-school match between le Ante College and Napier High School. This should be a first-class game. With plenty or action. The School team has been showing great form of late, while Te Ante are fresh from securing the Moaswr Cup at Palmerston North.

As a curtain-raiser to this match the second fifteens of the two schools will meet. Hastings fans will have to content themselves with junior games. However, this season junior football in Hastings has been of a high standard and all the teams are very evenly matched. Hastings and Celtic meet bn the No. 1 ground at 2.45 p.m., and on the neigbouring area Havelock North meet Waimarama. Two promising third grade matches are set down for curtain-raisers for the two main games. THE TEAMS.
