REMODELLING ROTORUA

SPORTS, CAFES ANO DANCING. LAKE SHORE RECLAMATION. Proposals for the laying out of the lake front and borough reserves surrounding Lake Rotorua were outlined at a meeting of residents convened by the Mayor, Mr. F. Jackson, on behalf of the Borough Council. The Mayor explained the proposals with the aid of a series of wash drawings prepared at the request of Mr. Douglas Mawson by a group of town planners in Britain. The first step would be the reclamation of about eight acres on the lake foreshore at the end of Tutanekai street. A portion of this would bo set aside for villa residences on a renewable lease, and tho remainder would be roaded and the lake front, about two chains wide, laid out ornamentally The complete scheme includes a road round the lake, with areas for sports of all kinds, cafes, band stand and epen-air dancing. A harbour suitable for launches and boats, with piers, will also be provided. There will bo bathing facilities supplied with hot water from the hot springs. The idea is that the scheme will he developed as finances permit. A boulevard from Whakarewarewa to the lake front is provided for, and the village will bo remodelled. The Mayor said it was expected that tho whole scheme could be carried out without any additional expense to the ratepayers. The estimated cost of the ccmplete scheme is about £lOO,OOO. Lt is expected that the first of the work will be done before the next tourist season.
