MAHENO’S BO’SUN

CREW OBJECT TO CHANGE. REFUSAL TO SIGN-ON. Dunedin, June 12. Demanding that the boatswain, who was a former member of the crew should be re-engaged, a hitch occurred in signing on a new crew for the Maheno to-day. The vessel is about to resume her running in the Melbourne service. A large number of men gathered outside the Government Shipping Office this afternoon for the purpose of signing on as the crew of the Maheno. After a long wait, however, the men dispersed and the articles were not signed. Inquiries revealed the fact that the men objected to the Union Steam Ship Company engaging a new boatswain. It was stated that the new bo’sun was desired by the chief officer of the Maheno Negotiations for a settlement of the dispute proceeded throughout the afternoon among parties concerned, but as these were without effect the matter was referred to the Union Company’s office in Wellington. The question upon which a deadlock has been reached is which party has the right to select a man for the position of bo’sun, but it was stated this evening that a settlement will probably be reached to-morrow.

The Maheno is timed to sail from Port- Chalmers for Bluff and Melbourne on Saturday afternoon, and the Union Company will no doubt make every effort to dispatch her to schedule.
