PLUNKET SHIELD GAME WELLINGTON MAKES 283. •AUCKLAND 34 WITHOUT LOSS Wellington, March 8. The second day’s play in ithe deciding match for the Piunkez Shield to-day was full of fluctuations which kept the interest of the 4000 spectators keyed to a high pitch. The opening of Wellington’s innings was highly sensational, as Matheson bowled with such devil that he had Foley and Lowry both caught behind the sticks by the time seven runs were on the slate. Anthony supported Matheson so ably that the Wellington batsmen came and went in rapid succession. Six wickets were down for 41 runs, but a solid century by McLeod and a fighting innings by Gallichan, James and Massey enabled the home eleven eventually to reach a fair total. Auckland in the second innings have lost no wickets for 34, and they opened the innings with a 150 lead. The day was fine but overcast with a light northerly. Scores are as follow AUCKLAND.
