TRAFFIC REGULATIONS
THE CONFERENCE’S WORK. ORDER OF REFERENCE. Wellington March S. Although pains have been taken by the Minister of Transport (the Hon. W. A. Veitch) to make clear the le stricted scope of the recent conference in Wellington between the Transport Department and reipfeseniatives cl' local bodies and motor in tcr/'is it has been wrongly assume:! in some quarters that the conference was called to consider not merely tiaffie iegulatioiis hnt major questions of policy. These latter, however, were never in the order of reference. Interviewed on the subject, the Minister emphasised the difference between the administrative side of the question within which falls the work of the conference uud the larger problems,
some of,which need legislation, and some of which are already being studied by the technical staff of the Transport Department. “My attention,” said Mr. Veitch, “has been drawn to articles in news papers arising out of the recent con ference held in Wellington to com pletely review the motor regulations An impression appears to exist that the conference intended in some way to advise the Government as to what might he done to cure some of our transport troubles, hnt the puhl'e may rest assured that the Govern nipnt fully appreciates that the con ference could not possibly have any bearing on the major questions of transport. Its main purpose was to review the regulations, to. ascertain whether more elasticity could he obtained to ease the growing problem of traffic congestion without sacrificing safety or unduly increasing the cost of road construction and main tcnance or traffic control,’’
