HAGEN IN AUSTRALIA. GASPS OF AMAZEMENT. [United Press Association—By GableCopyright.) Sydney, March 9. Hagen, partnered by the Australian open champion, Ivo Whitton, easily accounted for the youthful local champions, Hattersley and Wines, at Manly. Hattersley is a long hitter and the crowd was interested to see how he compared with the visitor. The local man often made the longest drives, but Hagen was straighter. He did the journey out in 35, returning in 37. He and Whitton won two up. The gallery was more concerned to see Hagen’s play than in the result of the match His greatest shots were a couple of woods, which carried him almost on, to the fifth green, bringing a gasp of amazement from the onlookers. He was only at fault at the twelfth and fourteenth holes, losing a stroke at each. At all the others the champion was shooting “par figures.”
