N.Z. INSTITUTE OF HORTICULTURE

HAWKE’S BAY COUNCIL. LEXTURE NEXT WEDNESDAY. The Hawke’s Bay branch of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture has been fortunate in securing Mr. D. Tannock, Superintendent of Reserves, Dunedin, to give a lecture on the work of a reserves department and the need for a national botanic garden. Mr. Tannock is looked upon throughout the Dominion as an authority cn horticultural matters, and is highly spoken of as a public speaker. It is expected that be will also deal with hardy ornamental trees and shrubs. A cup has recently been awarded for competition for the best collection of native plants, and this year was won by Messrs Duncan and Davies •of Taranaki, who exhibited over J5OO varieties. This competition has been the means of creating keen interest in the welfare of our native trees and shrubs throughout the Dominion, and Mr. Tannock will no doubt dell fully with this aspect of his subject. The lecture is to be given on Wednesday night next at 8 o’clock in the Jockey Chib rooms, and is advertised elsewhere in this issue.
