FOUNDATION STONE OF NEW BUILDINGS LAID SCIENTIFIC TRAINING FOR FUTURE FARMERS. PROVISION OF COMMODIOUS HOSTEL, (Per Pies* Association.) Palmerston North, Dec. 4. Speaking at the ceremony this morning of the laying of the foundation stone of the new buildings at Massey College, Sir George Fowlds, chairman of the college, said he anticipated the time when there would be grouped around the building training colleges for teachers, where they would imbibe an agricultural atmosphere which would better enable them to pass on to the children a bias in favour of agriculture! pursuits, upon which the prosperity of the country must mainly depend for many years to come. The college would not only give scientific training to a large number of future farmers in New Zealand but would be expected to provide scientifically trained men for educational purposes, for experts for the Agricultural Department and for scientific research. When the present building programme was completed and a commodious hostel provided there would he the most complete agricultural college in the British Empire south of the Equator. This morning the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the new buildings of Massey College was performed by the Governor-General. Included amongst those present were the Hons. G. W. Forbes. E. Newman, G. J. Smith, and Sir George Fowlds, chairman of the College Council. Later the GovernorGeneral was entertained at lunch hy the Borough Council. This afternoon he was accorded a farewell by the citizens.
