NEWS AND NOTES.

(Special Representative), On Tuesday night an official visit was paid to the Waipukurau Fire Brigade by Inspector Thomas Hugo. Following upon squad drill the inspector demonstrated the value of the breeches-piece coupling, and complimented the firemen on their state of efficiency, stating that it was up to the general standard. He remarked that tne motor reel and equipment were in first-class order. Some excitement was caused at the local railway station on Tuesday afternoon as the result of a Polled Angus bull breaking out of a truck into the loading pen ere Mr. W. Porter, a Waipukurau drover, could close the door. Mr. Porter was knocked down and trampled upon, but fortunately escaped with minor injuries.

A number of horses required for the military camps to be held in Waipukurau during February have been brought from Palmerston North for grazing.

On Tuesday afternoon the Pukeora Sanatorium was visited by a large party of Hatunia ladies, patients being presented with edibles also parcels of literature.

Mr. T. Nelson, of Patea, is at present on a visit to Waipukurau, where his parents reside.

Mrs. M. Sowry is paying a visit to Nelson this week in consequence of the illness of her brother-in-law. Messrs. C. Gair and A. Dawson, of the Government Audit Office, are at present on an official visit to Waipukurau. Lieut. F. E. B. Ivimey, N.Z.8.C., of Napier, Adjutant of the Hawke’s Bay Regiment, inspected the local Senior Cadet Corps on Tuesday. In honour of his approaching marriage, Mr. L. H. Carter, of the Waipukurau Co-operative Dairy Co.’s staff, was met by his associates at the factory recently and presented with an electric iron and a set of aluminium ware. The secretary, Mr. T. R. Southall voiced sentiments of goodwill, thus tangibly expressed. Last night a representative party of local Orphans paid a visit to the Pukeora Sanatorium, meeting with a cordial welcome aqd being heartily thanked for the entertainment provided.
