WAIPAWA BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING.

(Special Representative.) The Waipawa Hospital Board met yesterday. Present: Mr L. M. Monckton (in the chair), Sister B. F. Anderson, Messrs N. G. Hawthorn, H. W. White, Percy Hunter, D. Eddy and L. Glenny. Leave of absence was granted the chairman (Mr W. H. Rathbone) and Mr R. A. Fraser. The chairman extended a cordial welcome, on behalf of the board, to the newly-appointed representative for the Waipawa County, Mr Glejny, chairman of that body, who is the successor of Mr F. J. Witherow resigned. Lee, Mackie, Harker and McKay, also H. F. Norris, solicitors, advised on the position in regard to the bequest in the estate of A. Bowden, discussed, as to the revocation of same in the interests of a needful relative.— The chairman moved that the bequest be waived, subject to tho approval of tho Government Audit Office.

The Hospital Boards’ Association forwarded a Ministerial reply to conference rcprcsenlativcs in respect of accident cases admitted to hospitals, preference to claims against workers’ compensation, also common law payment on the score of hospital fees being denied. It was shown that leg islation would be required to deal with tho position.—Received. The Palmerston North Hospital Board intimated that a conference would bo held at Palmerston North on the 3rd prox to discuss the taking over tubercular sanatoria in the North Island, and asking the board to appoint a representative.—Mr Hawthorn said that tho board should have further information concerning the cost of the scheme. Mr Hunter held that the burden would be heaviei as applied to country boards, but Mr Hawthorn held that in to largo centres of population the capitat values were high. In reply to Mr Hunter tho secretary stated that tho Waipawa subsidy was las per £ of expenditure, whereas Wellington receives 255.

Mr Fraser and the secretary were appointed to attend the conference. The Medical Officer of Health forwarded a list of bed vacancies in departmental sanatoria, the number as applied to the Pukeroa Sanatorium being 57—Received. The Hospital Boards’ Association acknowledging and replying to the board’s letter apropos the basis of taxation purposes. —It' was resolved that the chairman of the board, with Mr Monckton and the secretary draft a reply to the points raised.

GENERAL MATTERS It was decided that Sister Anderson, Mr Monckton. secretary, and superintendent, deal with the mattei of erecting a protective fence in front of the Isolation Bloek.

In response to the representations of the matron, it was decided that the chairman, and secretary report on the matter of providing plant for food refrigerating purposes. Mr H. W. White was elected as a member of the Finance Committee, vice Mr Witherow.

Mr L. Glenny was elected to fill a vacancy ou tho Visiting Committee. The resignation of Nurse Haynes was accepted with regret in view of her marriage, after being engaged for two and a half years at the Ratlibono Maternity Hospital, and a small bonus was voted as a token of appreciation of tho good service rendered to tho board.

The secretary (Mr P. R. Smyrkl reported that the credit bank balance at the close of the period amounted to £2587 3s 4d. All tho third quarter’s levies had been collected and subsidy claims gone forward. Although the financial position was very satisfactory, the board would bo faced with a large expenditure during tho next two months. Besides payments for tho new buildings there would be some heavy accounts for other works.
