EARTHQUAKE AREA
REPAIRING THE DAMAGE. ROAD FORMATION. Wellington, November 11. Inquiries made as to the position of the restoration of earthquake damage in the Buller Gorge on the main highway between Nelson and Westport elicited the-information that the Main Highways Board has 260 men employed on this road at th present time. A member of the board who recently inspected the road was able to travel from the western side as far as the Lyell by car and from th eastern side as far as Newton Flat, so that there is now onb- about twelve miles of the road not negotiable by cai. The Main Highways Board has every hope that before next winter the road will be negotable for traffic, although, of course, it will be some considerable time before it can be brought to the state of excellence and stability which existed before the earthquake.
