Bowling Analysis.—Larwood two for one, Tate three for 37, White none for 11, Freeman two for 15, Geary two for 25. COMMENT ON THE TEST TEAM. “BIFFICULT TO UNBERSTANB.” London, Jan. 19. The “Observer” states that the Auistralian selectors seem to surprise the home critics as much as ours since the rubber was lost. It might have been expected that an experiment would have been made in the remaining tests with an eye to the future. It is difficult to understand the overlooking of Bettington and other players with formidable claims, but the conservatism is not only confined to the Old Country.

PLUNKET SHIELD. AUCKLAND DISAPPOINTING. Auckland, Jan. 19. At the close of the second day’s play at Eden Park in the Plunket Shield match between Auckland and Wellington, honours rest decidedly with the visitors. Wellington’s first innings score was carried from 368 for nine to 403 this morning, and in reply Auckland scored 308 for the loss <f nine wickets. Conditions were again ideal, and the wicket continued to play well, except that an occasional hall kept low. There was a large attendance in the afternoon. Auckland’s batting was more than a little disappointing, seeing that there were really only two periods when the Wellington bowlers were on top. Auckland lost a fine opening pain, Bowley and Mills, when Hendeison took over the bowling, although Bowley was unfortunate in playing on a ball which would never have bowled him. With two down for 20, Weir and Postles became associated in a fine partnership, which improved matters considerably. Weir gave slightly the better exhibition, although the batting of both was characterised by a rock-like defence. A bright spot in the innings was the batting of Gillespie. who made 78 in brilliant style. Henderson was again the most successful bowler for Wellington. McGirr and Rotherham were both accurate. but Lowry did not make sufficient. use of Lambert. Altogether nine bowlers were tried. A regrettable incident occurred in the afternoon, when Umpire Tnrtnn had to sneak to fxiwrv about a remark made by Henderson when a decision went against him. Scores:—
