PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH. AUCKLAND ALL OUT. [Per Press Association.! Auckland, Jan. 21. Tlie Plunket Shield game between Auckland and Wellington was resumed this morning in sultry weather on a fast wicket. Player and Rowntree started cautiously to the howling of McGirr and Henderson. The hitter had no direction and sent an offer to Rowntree wide off the pin. After a bye Player got a brace and then, in the following over from Henderson, Rowntree edged one and Foley, at first slip, gathered a nice catch low down.—3ll—lo—l, Auckland’s innings had lasted just over five hours. With a lead of 92 runs on the first innings Hiddlestone and Dempster opened Wellington’s second innings to the bowling of Weir and Player. Both batsmen turned Weir to the leg side, Mills, on the boundary, cutting off the fours. Player struck a length and was swinging away to the off but Hiddlestone got well forward to the spin of the ball and drove him twice for two. From the other end Weir was also doing a trifle in the air. Hiddlestone pulled one hard 1 and Player let it trickle through his hand for a brace. Whitlow was the next to misfield and let a single away amid chirps from the hillsiders. Both batsmen were going cautiously. Hiddlestone pulled Player hard to the line and reached double figures. Allcott had taken a leaf from Lowry’s book and even ’f the short leg field was pierced there was an extra man deep to save the boundary. Twenty was up in as many minutes.

Dempster got Weir nicely to the line. Allcott came on at the terrace end to send a maiden along to Dempster. Hidderston opened out at Weir, hitting twos and threes. Dempster clipped a four through the covers. After a single Hiddleston pulled Weir hard to the fence. Hie over had realised a dozen runs and 40 was up in 35 minutes. Allcott, howling an immaculate length, sent, down three maidens in succession. His next over yielded only a single. The batsmen were now playing confidently with very keen fielding in. close tip positions Dempster singled Allcott nicely and Hiddleston followed with a hard on drive for four. Dunning, for a couple of overs, whipped very fast from the nitch Dempster was satisfied to play hard on the defensive but Hiddleston was out for runs and was driving with great freedom. Fifty went up at the end of 85 minutes’ play, Hiddleston being 32 and Dempster 17. In the hour Dempster had accumulated 17 runs only; maidens were the order of the day and the spectators were ap plauding ironically. Bowley came on at the terrace end with a deep spread field on the lee side. He tossed them high and slow. Dunning was firing them in with plenty of pep. Details:— AUCKLAND.
