HAWKE CUP PRELIMINARY HAWKE’S BAY LEADING POVERTY BAY. WORKER RECORDS A CENTURY. The Hawke Cup preliminary cricket match between Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay was continued yesterday afternoon in Napier. Except for a keen strong wind, conditions for play were ideal. In reply to Poverty Bay’s 197 recorded in the morning play, the home team established a lead of 146 after batting for the remainder of the day. The outstanding feature of the innings was the display given by Worker, who scored 115 inns. Another good display was that given by Reaney. A brief description of the play follows:— Upon resumption after luncheon Hawke’s Buy commenced the reply by sending in Worker and Stephenson. The attack was opened by Robertson, with the wind behind him. The second over wus taken by Dow. who went to the boundary twice for byes. Both batsmen played cautiously at the start, but took every advantage of any loose balls. When the score was 34, W. J Scholium replaced Dow for the sixth over. Still the pair kept going, and the half century was hoisted after 33 minutes’ batting Bennett made the next change in the attack by replacing Robertson, who was becoming expensive. Die change was successful in separating the batsmen, Stephenson return-

ing an easy catch to the bowler after being at the crease for 53 minutes—--69—1—35.

The next in was Mat. O’Brien. He opened his account witih a boundary. The pair batted steadily, and Worker sent the total 'into three figures with a couple of boundaries. The century had taken 64 minutes. Mat. O’Brien had been fairly steady, but at this stage he opened out his shoulders and scored rapidly. He finally fell to W. J. Scholium after batting for 45 min-utes—l4B-2—33.

Lowiy joined Worker, who had been giving a fine display. Lowry lost no time in smacking the bowling, and when the tea adjournment was called the score was 175 for two wickets. Worker was 84 and Lowry 13. Shortly after the recommencement of play Lowry sent an easy catch to Reeves at long-off.—lB7—3—lB. VISITORS’ SCORE OVERTAKEN. Reaney replaced him at the crease and took his time in settling down. The job of overtaking the visitors score was left to Worker, 'who smack ed a couple of fours to give Hawke's Bay the lead, and also place his indi viduai contribution past the century mark. His 100 took but 69 minutes to compile. Reaney then started to open out at the bowling, but shortly afterwards Worker was clean bowled, after knocking up 13 boundaries 220 -4—115.

Elliott was the next to don the pads, but Reaney was in his stride, and captured most of the bowling, which was being changed fairly frequently. The newcomer just managed to get into double figures before he fell to Dow, who had returned to the attack shortly after the adjournment.—24l—s—lo.

Beck was the next in. He played very cautiously and was content to leave the scoring to Reaney. After scoring a brace and nine singles, Beck was caught behind tho sticks.—2B3— 6—ll.

Owen walked to the crease, but failed to connect with the first ball, and was given out leg-before for a “duck.” -283-7—o.

Reaney was then-joined by Evans, who scored off the first ball. Reaney administered a good thrashing to the trundlers, and it was through dim that the third century was safely negotiated. Carrying 'on the rood work the score rapidly mounted, and Evans was opening out when the separation was effected by Reaney playing Dow on to his wicket. He had been at the crease for 83 minutes, and knocked half a dozen fours.—332—B—- — Pirie survived the remainder of the over and scored a single, but he was run out on a misunderstanding in the next over.—333—9—l. Mitchell went in to make the final wicket stand with Evans. He made it lively, but was quickly stumped, and the innings closed for 343. Evans had been in for 33 minutes, and the whole innings had taken 212 minutes to complete. Poverty Bay opened the second innings, but an appeal for failing light was upheld after the first over, and no wickets had fallen for six runs. Details:— POVERTY BAY.
