TE ARAI VALLEY LANDSLIDE
WATERS IMPOUNDED. SETTLERS’ FEARS. Gisborne, Sept. 4. As a result of the slip in Te Arai Valiev a fortnight ago when the hillside suddenly slid into Te Arai stream, a lake has been fornied. Fears are expressed that the impounded waters may break away suddenly. Settlers lower down the valley are taking precautions to remove their stock. When the slip occurred it was impossible to estimate accurately the loss of stock . but is now stated that the loss of one settler, L. Macintosh, amounts to 200 sheep. Forty sheep and two horses left alive on top of the slip are still there, it havcing been found impossible to rescue them.
