N.Z. COUNCIL MEETS PROPOSED VISIT FROM HARRY VARDON. N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP. MEETING. Wellington, August 8. The monthly meeting of the New Zealand Golf Council was held yesterday. A proof copy of the programme ot the New Zealand championship meeting at Dunedin, from October 12 to 20, was received from the Otago Golf Club and approved. Programmes will be circulated to all affiliated clubs within tile next few weeks, entries closing with the secretary of the Otago Club on September 28. It was decided that this year’s entrants will again require to obtain national handicaps from the association, for which all applications have to be made through the club secretaries before September 7, on which date all applications will be dealt with by the council. All those who secure national handicap certificates of 13 or under, equal to approximately a club handicap of 8. may enter for the championship events, and it is thought more likely that al) those with national handicaps of 11 and under will lie accepted. The president of the Otago Golf Club. Mr C. W. Rattray, kindly offered to give tlie trophy for the winner of the amateur championship, and Mr Rattray’s offer was accepted with thanks. ’rogrammes have been received from the Royal Sydney Golf Club for the Australian amateur and open championships next month, and it was reported that three New Zeaand players, including A. D. S. Duncan, have entered for these events, which commence on September 0.

In connection with the standardisation of courses, it was arranged that a sub committee, consisting of

Messrs A D. S. Duncan and W. A. Kiely, will meet next, week and go through the whole of the forms, together with Mr Redhead’s suggestions, and definitely decide what standard scratch score is to be adopted by each club. TOURNAMENTS FORTHCOMING. . A cablegram was received from a New Zealand golfer at present in England asking whether the council would give a substantia] guarantee to Harry Vardon, the well-known English professional, for a month's engagement in New Zealand from December 21, giving exhibition matches. It was resolved; after discussion, to reply to the effect that the time is very unsuitable for a tour ot New Zealand. Forthcoming tournaments were advised to the association as follow:— Dannevirke, August 9, 10 and 11; Rotorua, August 28 to 31; Takapau, August 29 and 30 (ladies). August 31 and September 1 (men’s); Hutt, August 23, 24 and 25; West Coast (Greymouth), August 22, 23 and 24; Waipukurau, September 6. 7 and 8; Napier. September 11, 12 13 and 14; North Otago (Oamaru), October 22; Hamilton (South Auckland Championship), October 4. 5 and 6; New Zealand Championships (Dunedin), October 12 to 20: Man awn tn October 22, 23, and 24; Seofield (Wanganui). October 20, 21 and 23; Wanganui Golf Club. October 4 5 and 6.

The Wakatipu Golf Chib, Queenstown, which hnd duly made application. was elected a member of the association, making the total number of clubs now affiliated to the association 149. ROSE BAY TOURNEY. MISS KAY PLAYS SPLENDIDLY. (Australian ami N 7. Pros? 1 Sydney, Aug. 8. The New South Wales women were eliminated from the semi-final of the golf championship as a result of today’s play, three Victorians and the New Zealand star, Miss Kay, carrying off the second round matches, which were played in dull weather with a light brjoze. Results:—

Mrs. Gatehouse (Victoria) beat Miss Hay (Victoria), one up; Miss MacLeod (Victoria) beat Mrs. Morgan (New South Wales), eight up and six to play; Miss Susie Tolhurst (Victoria) beat Mrs. Triglovc (New South Wales), three and two; Miss Kay (New Zealand) heat Mrs. Slack (New South Wales), six and five. An 18-hole stroke handicap was won by Miss M, Hill 91 (handcap 16), net 75. The Gatehouse-Hay contest was close all the way, Miss Hay just missing a half at the last hole. Mrs. Morgan never had a chance against the splendid driving of her opponent, and Miss Tolhurst equally overshadowed Mrs. Triglone.

The best golf of the day was Miss Kay’s, whose initials, “O. K.” are singularly apposite to the shots she played. Her opponent played very well, but was - quite unequal to the visitor’s game. The latter went out the nine holes in 37 made up of 3,4, 4,5, 4,3, 5, 4 and 5, and made the home journey in 40—4, 5,4, 5,3, 6,6, 3 and 4.

The draw for the semi-finals tomorrow is: Miss MacLeod meets Miss Kay, and Mrs. Gatehouse meets Miss Tolhurst.

WAIPUKURAU TOURNEY. The Waipukurau Club’s ladies’ golf tournament commenced on the Marakeke links yesterday. The entries were very good, and showed-an increase over former occasions. The results of yesterday’s play are as under:— Championship. At the end of the medal round the following qualified for the championship:—Mrs Collison, Miss Chase, Miss Ormond, Miss R. Smith, Mrs G. H. Clark, Mrs Mackie. The first round for the championship resulted: — Mrs Collison beat Miss Chase. Miss Ormond beat Miss R. Smith. Miss Guy beat Mrs Woolams. Mrs G. H. Clark beat Mrs Mackie. Marakeke Handicap. The following eight players qualified for the Marakeke Handicap:—Miss O. Smith, Mrs Freedman, Mrs Trevor, Mrs H. Davies, Miss Dalgleish. Mrs J. Rood, Miss Simpson, and Miss L. Pease. The first round of the handicap resulted :—Miss Pease beat Miss Simpson ; Miss Dalgleish beat Mrs Rood; Mrs Trevor beat Mrs Davies; Mrs Freedman beat Miss O. Smith. Senior Medal Round.
