In the first heat of the boxing at the Olympic Ganics, in the lightheavyweight class, Jackson (Britain) outpointed Cleverley (New Zealand), in three three-minute rounds. Cleverley was eliminated. It was a slow, featureless fight, in which the English man was doing most of the attacking and clearly earned the verdict. Neither got a good punch homo in rhe first round, which was mostly clinches. Thereafter, Jackson utilising a longer reach, frequently broke through Hie New Zealander’s defence especially with straight rights. Cleverley early received a severe blow on the nose, nfter which his breathing become difficult. Jackson’s superiority was clearly demonstrated in the thud round', when the New Zealander wns almost wholly on the defence. He made little impression, occasionally scoring with right hooks. Jackson was faster footed and prevented Cleverley getting to close quarters and once floored hint with a heavy right above the ear. In the second round of the welterweight boxing, the Now Zealander Ted Morgan knocked out the Swede. Selfrid Johansson.
