HASTINGS B AT PORANGAHAU. A TWO-GOAL WIN. The Hastings representative B team journeyed to Porangahau yesterday afternoon and played the Poho-East Coast team on a wet and very uneven ground. Porangahau won the toss, and from the first bully had Hastings penned in their circle, and a score looked certain. Davis gave temporary relief by hitting out at the side line. Poho were putting plenty of yim into their play and had Hastings again on the defensive, a hard shot jilst missing the uprights. Good play by Jones, Grenside, and Schroder took play into the Porangahau circle, where Grenside endeavoured to shoot. Riki Ruben cleared. but Schroder, in a handy position, sent in a hard shot which found the net. The bully from half-way saw Joe Paki in some outstanding play, the ball passing through the Hastings backs. Porangahau sent the ball over the top of the net as the whistle sounded half-timq. GOOD PLAY BY HASTINGS. The second spell saw Hastings m much better form, the players being more accustomed to the heavy ground. Jones and Grenside were combining well and had Poho tied up for some time. A good save by Lewis, who passed in to Grenside, was responsible for a fine solo offort, Grenside beat the Poho full-backs and sent in a shot from the side of the circle, the ball finding the net, this piece of play being applauded by the spectators. A good forward rush by ”oho nearly ended in a score, but Davis. , playing a safe game, proved a thorn in the side of Porangahau, and again saved his team in an exciting piece of play. The Hastings forwards, playing with great combination and using the short pass, had Poho completely tied up, Jones sending in a shot which just missed. Play now centred around Porangahau circle until Billy Edwards cleared with a long shot up-field. Lewis stopped this shot and again put his forwards on the offensive, but after give-and-take play no further score eventuated. Messrs Redwood and Matthews refereed. THE A’S LOSE. Wairoa, August 8. Wairoa (holders) successfully defended the Manurere Shield, in a men’s representative match here to-day against Hastings, after a fast, even game, by four goals to three.
