POLICE COURT

SITTING IN HASTINGS. MOTORISTS IN TROUBLE. A sitting of the Police Court was held in Hastings this morning when Messrs H. R. French and F. C. Wilkinson, J.’sP., dealt with the following cases;— Failure to give way to traffic approaching on the right was the charge laid against Ivan William Mcßobie, who pleaded guilty.—Senior-Sergeant Dempsey stated that the case was brought forward as a warning to motorists. Mcßobie was fined 5/with costs totalling £1 6/-. For riding bicycles without lights, James Hollis, Leo Sigley and William Wright were each fined 10/- and costs 10/-. The Bench remarked that next time the fine would be substantial.

For riding a motor-cycle without lights Thomas Brandon was fined £l, plus 10/- court costs. James Cambridge was fined 10/and costs 10/- for riding a bicycle Ou the footpath. Driving a motorcycle in a manner deemed dangerous to the public was the charge laid against Barclay MeLaren. who. it was stated, rode his machine without having his hands on the handle bars.—ln finding him £2 and costs 10/-, the Bench remarked that it was hoped that the “stupid practice will not be repeated,” THEFT OF LIQUOR. Breaking and entering the premises of E, Newbigin, brewer, and stealing therefrom six bottles of stout valued at 9/- was the charge preferred against Frederick Bevins.

Detective Fitzgibbon stated that on Thursday mornine last it was found that one of the doors of the brewery had been broken open and the liquor found to be missing. The following day another attempt was made, but it was unsuccessful. Enquiries were made and the accused. When interviewed, admitted the theft, stating that he and another man. whom he did not know, had entered the premises, The police had been unable to identify the other man. Evidence was given by Joseph Bell and Constable Alsop. The accused, who pleaded guilty, was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
