NEWS AND NOTES.

SPECIAL MEETING OF TOWN BOARD. A special meeting of the Havelock North Town Board was held last evning for the purpose of altering and making additions and substrations to the roll of electors. The roll was approved, 646 names being entered, or 4C more than were on the previous one. The main roll is now closed, but those persons desirous of having their names entered, and who are eligible, may have them put on the supplementary roll which closes <>n September 5. The election will be held on September 19th. The Works Committee was authorised to carry out necessary work on the footpath extensions, and to top dress them with a view to having them tar sealed at some future date.

The clerk, Mr W. H. Anderson, was warmly complimented upon the excellent manner in which the cemetery had been attended to, and the hope was expressed that the grounds would not be allowed to lapse into then former state.

General eatisfaction was expressed at the fact that the Mam Highways Beard had granted the board a suosidy o* i'.'d for £l, and the chairman and clerk were congratulated upon way they have handled the business. The chairman thought this would probably be the first work that the Hastings Borough would commence when the weather is suitable,

The Fire Brigade received a call about 6 o’clock last night to put out a chimney fire at Mr B. L. Chambers’ house in Duart road. Superintendent Toop and two men extinguished the fire without much trouble.

A meeting of the ladies’ committee of District School ball, was held in the schoolroom yesterday afternoon. On the advise of the Health Department, and the chairman of the school committee, it was decided to postpone the school'ball until a date in September to be fixed later. St, Columba’s Church Havelock North, held another of their popular winter club evenings last night. ■ A musical programme given by Mrs W. C. Whitlock and a number of friends was much enjoyed.
