RUGBY FOOTBALL

MANAWATU v. HOROWHENUA.

Shannon, June 23. Although the ground was heavy from recent rains, perfect weather prevailed for the first game between Manawatu and Horowhenua District Council’s teams, which took place at Shannon this afternoon. The attendance and the class of football were disappointing. The Manawatu team failed to produce the football of which they were capable, and had to give way to their Horowhenua friends, whose forwards gave their backs numerous opportunities, and enabled them to emerge with a 15 points to 6 margin in their favour. As a curtainraiser a match was played between the B teams of the same two councils. Manawatu here sueceded in winning by 14 points to 8. HIGH SCHOOL MATCH. Palmerston North, June 23. Exhilarating fooball was seen at the Palmerston Showgrounds this afternoon, when Palmerston Boys’ High School defeated Wairarapa High School by 12 points to nil. The ground was sodden following the thaw of a severe frost and rain which fell early in the afternoon. The greasy ball made good back play difficult. Notwithstanding, the Palmerston backs gave a fine display and threw the ball about in good style, while their forwards, particularly Swindell, excelled in the loose. ■ On the day’s pay there is itte doubt that Palmerston were far and away the better team. It was decided at the Manawhenua Rugby Union meeting on Saturday that the Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay matches be played at Palmerston North, and the Taranaki match at Levin.
