ELLERSLIE NOTES

The following comments on horses with engagements at the Auckland meeting are taken from the Auckland “Star”:— * • • Vexatious did not rtin Well at Wanganui, and she will have to do a lot better to have a chance at Ellerslie. She has been paid up for in the Great Northern Hurdles, but fell when schooling this morning. * • • Te Kara finished fourth in the Cornwall and York Handicaps at the last Great Northern meeting, and he has been accepted for in the Cornwall Handicap on Saturday next. If ■ he - is as well as he was last year he will take some beating for he only has to carry 9.12 as against 10.6.

Mount Marta has been accepted for in the Penrose Hurdles at Ellerslie next-Saturday. He won the May Hurdles, one milt and three-quarters, in most convincing style at Wanganui last week, and on that performance will have some friends next Saturday. Last season he ran well for a good way in the Great Northern Hurdle Race.

About twelve months ago J. Thorpe had Chamour and Lomint in the Cornwall Handicap, and the former, who was thought to be the better of the pair, unfortunately broke a leg while training at Ellerslie. However, his full sister, Lomint, carried off the event, and she is engaged again in the Cornwall Handi. cap next Saturday. Lomint is coming along well and may give a good account of herself. * * •

At the Auckland winter meeting 12 months ago Tinolroa put Up one of his best performances when he scored in the King George Handicap, in which race he defeated a number of good performers. He has not been a great success since then, although he finished third lu the Flying Handicap at the Waikato meeting last month and his turn for "a win may not be far off. Tinokoa is quite at home ou a soft track and is a horse likely to perform well at Ellerslie next month.

Perle de Leon has been paid up for in both the chief jumping events at Ellerslie. He was third ill the Winter Hurdles, two miles and aquarter, at the Wellington winter meeting last season, and this season, prior to the Wanganui meeting, performed well on the flat. He had his first race over hutdies for some considerable time in the May Hurdles at Wanganui, but did not impress. However, in the Century Hurdles on the second day he ran a great race, being beaten by Red Fuchsia by a very narrow margin. On that showing he will have to be considered in the Great Northern Hurdles.

Pouri has been paid up for in both the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeples. At the Manawatu meeting at Christmas time Pouri won the Tokomaru Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters, with 11.2. He was was started again till the Wanganui meeting lust week when he ran third in the May Hurdles. He can jump well, and appeared in his races at Wanganui as though he will stay on. He certainly cannot be ruled out of the big event next Saturday. As to his ability over the big fences nothing is known, and one would prefer to see him in a cross-country event before uspporting him.

When schooled at Ellerslie oil Thursday Lord Bruce gave a good exhibition of jumping over a round of the steeplechase course. He tired toward the finish and does not appear to stay on too well, and may find two and a-half miles over country a bit beyond him. « » «

After her good effort in the Linley Handicap at Te Rapa, when she ran second to Respirator, Speechless is likely to show up in hack races during the approaching meeting at Ellerslie. She is now trained by A. Cook, at Te Awamutu, who can he relied on to produce her in the best of condition.

Town Bank, who was recently purchased by Mr. J. M. Samson, was nominated for the Great Northern Hurdle Race and the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie next Saturday, but he has been allowed to drop out of the jumping event. In the Cornwall Handicap, with 8.9. he will have some friends, for he has good credentials up to a mile and a-half, and since he resumed racing recently he has been placed on five occasions. At the Auckland autumn meeting he was third in the President’s Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, and the next day was second in the Autumn Handicap, one mile -and a-half. to Mask. Town Bank finished third in the Foley Memorial, one mile and aquarter, at the Avondale meeting, second in the Rangiriri Highweight Handicap, one mile, at the Waikato meeting, and third in the Mcßae Memorial Handicap, one mile and aquarter, at the Egmont meeting.

Although Thursby has not been up any great length of time R. E. Brown has the Thurnh'am gelding looking really well. This horse handles the heavy going in great style and it would not surprise to find him racing prominently during the coming meeting at Ellerslie.

In his two starts at the Waikato meeting Stormy failed to get in the money, although he ran a fair race when he finished fourth in the Te Rapa Handicap on the concluding day of that fixture. Stormy is due to make his next appearance in the Cornwall Handicap, but will require to improve to have any chance in that event. « « *

Desert Glow, who has not yet been tried over hurdles in public, was a strong tip in the 'city during the week for the Great Northern Hurdle Race, but he has not been paid up for. He is good on the flat, and looks the type to make a good hurdler, but one would like to see him in action in a hurdle race before assessing his chances in such an important event.

When Ripon Abbey finished second to Lady Cmtra in the Trial Hurdle race at Ellerslie in the autumn he showed considerxble promise, but he has not so far displayed any improvement in his subsequent races. The Cambridge-owned gelding will be seen in action again during the coming meeting at Ellerslie.

Respirator continues to hit out very freely in his training work at Ellerslie and J. Buchanan must be given credit fob having the big Tea Tray gelding in such solid condition. Respirator, who has not been by any means an easy horse to train, never looked better than he does at the present time and if he fails to race prominently during the Auckland winter meeting it will not be for lack of condition.

* * * Comical was allowed to drop out of the Great Northern Hurdles, but remains in the Great Northern Steeplechase. This gelding is a pretty good hurdler, and seeing he won the Grand National Hurdles in 1926 with 11.4 he appeared to have a chance in the Great Northern Hurdles with 11.4. He has only once completed a steeplechase course and that was at Watjganui last week. In the Great Northern Steeplechase he has been awarded 10.2. and he went well over the big country this morniUß -

Wedding March won the Great Northern Hurdles last , year with 10.3, and was well fancied for the Great Northern Steeplechase, hut owing to the Memsahib incident, he was pot allowed to start in the Great Northern Steeples, and thus lost an opportunity of doing the same as El Gallo (twice), Lochella, Sir Rosebery and Liberator had done. However, Wedding March showed at the Auckland summer meeting and also at the autumn meeting that he was a great hurdler, for at the former fixture he won the Auckland Hurdle Race with 11.7, and at the latter meeting captured the' Brighton Hurdle Race with 11.8. Wedding March will be well fancied next Saturday.

The Jervois Handicap on Saturday will be run in divisions. Each division will be treated as a separate race, the totalisator heiny opened on each occasion. The club has decided to raise the stake money for the Jervois Handicap from £4OO to £650. £325 being allocated to each division. The divisions are as under First Division.
