Following a report that the Queen will not open the Olympic Games, a sensation was caused by a report in the “Telegraph” that the burgomaster will be away from the capital on holiday during the main part of the programme. Significance lies in the fact that the burgomaster is a strict' Sabbatarian, in consequence of which Amsterdam is one of the few cities in Holland where public dances are forbidden on Sundays. Later The burgomaster denied that he would he absent during the Olympic Gaines.
