AUSTRALIAN BACKSTROKE RECORD. A FIFTH BELOW THE WORLD’S BEST. Sydney, March 18. Bonnie Mealing covered 100 metres backstroke in 1.22 3-5, an Australian record and only one-fifth of a second outside the world’s record. EDNA DAVEY GOING, Sydney, March 18. Arrangements have now been made for Edna Davey to accompany the Olympic team. All th© members of the team must sign a guarantee bond for £360. ensuring that they will indemnifv the Olympic Federation to that amount if they become professionals upon being relieved from th e games. This course is taken because some competitors in the past have turned professionals. HAWKE'S BAY CENTRE MEETS. The Hawke’s Bav Swimming Centre held a meeting at the Napier Municipal Baths. Present: Messrs John Mason, M.P. (chairman), A. A. George (Hastings), H. Poppelwell (Havelock North), R. Pickard, A. Mclver (Heretaunga). H. Seed (Gisborne) C. McLean (Napier), M. McLeod. R- N Abbott (To Awa). E. Lonergan (Mahora), H. M. Bauchope (Olympic), E. D. Berry (handicapper) and H. Le Bas (secretary). Miss Stevens’ attempt on the 100 yards schoolgirls’ record at Hastings on March 9. when the distance was covered in 80sec. was passed as a provincial record. Clubs are to be advised that in '< number of cases handicaps are not based on the standard handicap marks as set down bv the New Zealand Council It was decided to approach the Napier Borough Council with a view to the council providing cork lanes for competitive swimming. The balance-sheet of the recent championship meeting, showing n loss of £lO 6s Id. was adopted, and accounts totalline £39 10s 7d were passed for payment
