The drowning of Claude Mulvaney, a married man, of Auckland, and Howard Bernard Loft the 9-year-old son of a Westmere family, formed tho tragic ending to a picnic party on the Wanganui river yesterday. Mulvaney and his wife were spending » holiday with the Lofts, and with Mrs Loft and the latter’s four children went for a holiday outing. De ceased were bathing, when they stepped off a ledge into deep water. The boy was in difficulties, and although Mulvaney was not a swimmer, he went to the assistance. Both sank out of sight, but two other children, who were also in trouble were saved by the mother. The bodies were re covered by the police half an hour later. The boy was found tightly clasped in Mulvaney’s arms. The body of a woman named Annie Waters was found by a boy in the lupins at St. Kilda, Dunedin, at 3.30 p.m. yesterday afternoon. Decensed, who lived with her sister at 43 Douglas street, St. Kilda, was reported missing nt 4.30 en January 3. A drowning accident occurred aea.
