“NOT NEARLY SO URGENT"

THE MORERE DEVIATION. MINISTER’S VIEWS OUTLINED. The Cook County Council’s request for the immediate construction of the proposed Morere deviation has not the support of the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams, who considers that it is not nearly so urgent as some other works in the main highways system. In replying to the council 'a request the Minister wrote that he had re" ferred the matter to the Highways Board, adding: “My own personal view is that this deviation at Morere is not nearly so urgent as many other works about tho country. The initial cost of constructing the deviation would not, of course, be the final cost and the maintenance would have to be borne very largely by the district concerned. The present road would of course, also have to bo kept open on account of access. I certainly think the matter is one which could quite well stand over for the present at any rate. Your representations will, however, receive careful const deration.” A letter from tho clerk of the Waiapu County Council on the same matter stated:— “In consideration of their own necessities and the fact that they have more than 20 miles of highway to metal in their own district, this council is unable to support your ap peal at present.”

Cr F. 8. Bowen said this was a matter which the Public Works Department had promised to undertake. The council did not wish to push a work the department thought unnccssary, but he had seen other works in and around Wellington which he considered were not so important. Although they might let the matter drop for the time being, they might continue theii agitations later, say, near election time.

The correspondence on the matter was received without further comment.—’‘Poverty Bay Herald.”
