NAPIER BOROUGH.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL, MATTERS OF GENERAL INTEREST. The regular meeting of the Napier Borough Council was held last evening when His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. Vigor Brown) occupied the chair. Other members present were Crs. J. Hindmarsh, A. E. Bedford, W G. Martin, C. D. Cox, J. C. Bryant, R. W. Goodger, C. H. Wilkie, P. F. Higgins and H. J, Harman. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. J. W. Callaghan. The secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board wrote asking if the Council could see its way to grant' a reduction in the price charged for electricity for demonstrating and drying out purposes now that hydro current was available and the retail charges had been reduced. —Referred to the Electrical Committee.

The stationmaster wrote asking permission to erect a directing board, and glass fronted notice case, at the Department’s ’bus stand on the Marine Parade, the former to indicate that tickets are obtainable at the ’bus office in Herschell street, and the latter to exhibit time-tables and other public notices—The matter was left to the Roads Committee for a report.

NELSON PARK TENNIS. The hon. secretary of the Nelson Park Tennis Club wrote- inquiring what arrangements have been mide for the ensuing year in connection with the tennis courts on Nelson Park. He stated that if the same are to be run by the club it would be necessary for them to hold then, annual . meeting at an early date in order to appoint a committee. The matter was referred to the Roads and Reserves Committee for consideration. Cr. Wilkie moved as a recommendation to the committee that it go into the aspect of making the tennis courts public so that visitors to the town could play on the courts without obligations to any club. This course was agreed upon. CROSSING RAILWAY LINES. The Roads and Reserves Committee reported having further considered the application made by Mr. Jens Pedersen to permit tho public to use Lots 12 and 13 part of Municipal Reserve 576, the former lying between the Marine Parade and the railway line and the latter between the railway line and Hastings street, and recommended that no action be taken in the matter as the Railway Department, by letter to the Council of 26th January last, a copy of which was sent to Mr. Pedersen on Bth February last, had intimated that the only authorised places where the public may cross over the railway were at public level crossings or by overbridges or sub-ways and that where it was known that the public were trespassing on the railway at unauthorised places steps must be taken to put a stop to it. It was decided to adopt the recommendation FARADAY EXTENSION. The borough solicitors wrote with reference to the Faraday street extension stating that the Public Works Department now asked the Council to pass a resolution agreeing to the piece of land forming part of the Police Station site at the corner of Carlyle and Faraday streets being proclaimed as a street.—This course was agreed to. The solicitors further wrote in connection with the Faraday street extension (Campbell’s portion) that the Order-in-Council permitting the laying out of this new street of a width of -10 feet had been gazetted and it was now necessary that the Council accept the dedications of the new street. They enclosed both dedications with acceptances by the Council endorsed, for execution under seal. It would also be necessary for the Council to pass a resolution exempting the new street from the provisions of Section 117 of the Public Works Act. They enclosed a form of resolution and asked that the same be passed and a copy returned to them duly certified.—This was also agreed to. HOW THE TRAMS FARE. The tramway manager’s report for tho four weeks prior to August 18 showed that there had been a decrease in everything when compared to the figures for the corresponding figures the previous year. The figures given are as below, those in parenthesis being those of last year: Traffic receipts £1039 15/4 (£11,331 12’8); working expenses; £961 0/3 (£994 16/9); nett revenue, £lO4 3/11 (£159 7/6). The nett revenue for the past 20 weeks was £BOO 17/9 (£9OB 1/6).
