RIOTS AT HAMBURG
SACCO-VANZETTI DEMONSTRATIONS
CONSTABLE STABBED TO DEATH SEVERAL HOURS’ FIGHTING , ENSUES. [By Cable — Press Assn. — Copyright.) (Received 26, 10.5 a.m.) Berlin, Aug. 25. At Hamburg Communist Sacco and Vanzetti demonstrators barricaded the streets and attacked the police, flinging stones, and bottles. They dragged out a policeman off duty who was travelling in a tramcar and brutally ill-treated him. The policeman endeavoured to escape, but he was collared after running a few yards and was bludgeoned and stabbed to death.
Policemen rushing to his rescue received a hail of stones. They retaliated with revolver shots. Order was restored after several hours fighting, several of the police and numeous onlookers being injured. Many arrests were made.— (A. and N.Z.) DAMAGE DONE IN PARIS MANY RIOTERS SENTENCED. Damage done during the Sacco Vanzetti riots is estimated at 10,000,000 francs, of which the Government is paving 60 per cent, and th? municipality 40 per cent.
Man- of those arrested were tried and sentenced to-dav to periods ranging from a month to ten months. — (A. and N.Z.)
