“FREE FIGHTS”
YOUNG MEN AT BLOWS EXPENSIVE PUGILISTIC EXHIBITION. Last evening there was a bit of a mix-up in Browning street. Napier, and while two young men were in the throes of imitating Dempsey and Sharkey, a man-in-blue arrived -in the scene and took a hand in the affray. The result of that litthi episode was heard in the Magistrate's Court before Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M.. this morning, when Arthur Alexander McDonald, a baker, aged 21 years, was charged with fighting with Edward Joseph Cleary, a labourer, aged 22 years, who was charged with fig,hting the first men tioned.
The accused pleaded guilty and were each fined £3, in default 11 days’ imprisonment. Both were given until Saturday in which to pay the fighting fees. Alf Seastrand, a labourer, 21 years of age, also pleaded guilty to adopting a threatening manner.
It was explained by Senior. Sergeant Powell that the accused had met » man named Sparks His Worship: Yes. and then they began to fly.
Continuing, the sergeant added that had the constable not arrived there would have been a fight. Seastrand, too. was fined £3, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, 18 hours being given in which to “raise the wind.”
