MAN WOUNDED WITH KNIFE

CHARGE AGAINST INQUIRY AGENT. Auckland, Aug. 23, A sequel to the admission to the Auckland Hospital last night of Alexander Percy Cuthbert Bentley, aged 27, suffering from knife wounds in the back of the neck, was heard in the Police Court to-day, when Herbert Marshall Brooks, aged 47, a private inquiry agent, was charged with intent to do grevious bodily harm to Bentley by wounding him. Accused, when he walked into the dock, looked as though he was in need of hospital treatment himself. His face was badly bruised and swollen, both his eyes were blackened and he had a wound over his left eye. Chief Detective Ward asked for a remand until August 29th. He opposed bail. “The facts are that last evening Bentley, who is iu partnership with Mrs. Brooks in a Parisian dancing studio, went to Brooks’ house in Wanganui Avenue,” sgiid the Chief Detective. “Accused had had some drinks, and some words ensued, Bentley stating that Brooks resented his friendship with his wife. In a fight Brooks used a carving knife, inflicting a wound four inches’ bang in the back of Bentley’s neck. The wound was a deep one and it several several arteries. Although his injuries are not at present regarded as very serious, it is uncertain .what they might lead to, therefore I am opposing the granting of bail.” “I think I will give him bail,” said the Magistrate (Mr. Hunt), who fixed’it at £lOO.
