EASY WIN

N.Z. BEATS CUMBERLAND INNINGS AND 18 RUNS, MERRITT’S FINE RECORD. IBy Cable —Press assn. — Copyright.) (Received 23, 8.20 a.m.) London, Aug. 22. The New Zealanders had an easy win over Cumberland, which does not take high rank amongst the secondclass counties. On resuming to-day both Blunt and Dempster were quickly disposed of by Walmsley. The former fell to a smart catch in the slips at 71 and Dempster soon followed after sending one ball over the ropes. Walmsley met with further success by getting rid of Merritt and Cunningham, but Bernau and James offered a stubborn resistance. Tire former hit very attractively and one fine straight drive pitched over the boundary. Lowry, who went in late, also helped the score along and when all were out at the tea adjournment the total had reached 302.

SLOW BOWLERS TROUBLESOME.

With the exception of Walmsley, the county players failed badly in their second attempt against Blunt and Merritt. They appeared helpless in the face of the slow bowling, and Merritt, with five wickets for 49, achieved a fine record in the match of ten for 79.

Though the sixth wicket partnership put on 56 the game was finished off rather suddenly by 6.20 o’clock, and New Zealand won by an innings and 18 runs. Scores:—
