CONQUEST OF EVEREST

ITALIAN EXPEDITION PLANNED TO BEAT MALLORY’S RECORD. (Received 23, 9.15 am,) London, Aug. 22. “The Times’ " Milan correspondent says that the preparations for an attack on Mount Everest, proceeding since the British failure, are now almost completed. Signor Belloni, president of the Alpine Club, who is now approaching the Government to authorise the expedition, is financing the venture. Italian alpinists believe Mallory’s and Irvine’s deaths are no proof of the impracticability of scaling Mount Everest, but a more judicious placing of the bas« camps is necessary. If the Thibet authorities persist in their recent attitude in not allowing whites to proceed to Mount Everest owing to Tribetan veneration for the peak, the expedition will attack Mount Godwin-Austen (28,250 feet) and thus beat Mallory's record.— (“Times’’ cable.)

In June, 1924, Messrs, Mallory and Irvine sot out to climb the summit of Everest, while Mr. Odele remained at a lower level to watch their progress. He saw them for some time high up the mountain, and then mist blew across. They were not seen again. Odele went in search of them, and reached the height of 27,000 feet—a record height—but no trace of the missing men could be found. A Gurkha and a Thibetan also died from exposure.
