NEWS AND NOTES. The rainfall on Friday morning was phenomenal, as indicated by the record of 1.49 inches for the few hours of its duration. A consignment of 40,000 fry from tne Dannevirke hatcheries will be liberated in the upper tributaries of* the Tuki Tuki river, above Waipukuray. to-morrow by arrangement with the Hawke’s Bay Acclimatisation Society. At the Power Board xneetotsg yefsteraythe secretary (Mr G.E. liowler) stated that country accounts had been met in a very satisfactory man ner and this was a very encouraging feature of thf Board’s finance Considerable praise was forthcoming from the visiting competitors at the Ladies’ Golf Tournament at Marakcke, for the excellent condition of the links in general and the greens in particular. For this high state of excellence gfeat credit is due to Mr W. Billington, the groundsman of the elub. Another fiature of the tournament was the excellent catering arrangents of Mrs Billington. POWER BOARD MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Central Hawke’s Buy Power Electric Board was held yesterday, in Waipukurau. Present: Messrs A. C. Russell (chairman) Chas. Pattison, W. Malenoir, A. W. 8. Longley, J. A. Kerr, W. H. Rathbone, E. A. Goodgor and F. J. Witherow. Correspondence was dealt with as under:— The Waipawa County Council wrote in regard lo the charge for street lighting-—The reply of the seeit'lnry Was read, this showing that the charge would bo reduced if 15 lamps were installed as a minimum. The Wnipukurau County Council disclaimed liability for shifting a pole near the Sanatorium, the amount Involved being 114 8s fid. The engnmer explained the circumstances of the case, stating that he had been naked lo carry out the work, by the County Overseer. The secretary stated that an authoritative opinion tended to show that the local body was respon sibic for the cost of such an under taking—The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, engineer and 1 secretary. The Aeting-Minister of Railways j advised that cectric ighting would bo installed at the Takapau station this ■ financial year, hut that other places 1 could not be wired at present.--Be- I ceived. The W.F.C.A., Pahiatua, advised its [ willingness to sell a bowser pump for , £75. —The action of the committee ap- I pointed to deal with this matter, in j deciding upon purchase was endorsed. • An application was received from | W. H. Leach as to the installation of a communilw lighting service.—Application granted. GENERAL. The Finance Committee had recommended an increase of salary in the case of a member of the staff who had completed a vear’s service. Mr Goodgor supporting the proposal Mr Rathbone said that he did not believe in salaries being reviewed after the estimates for the vear had been prepared The matter could come forward at a later date. Mr Malenoir endorsed the point of view of Mr Rathbone as to the precedent involved.

Mr Rathbone moved and Mr Malenoir seconded: “That the matter be deferred till the end of the vear.”— This was carried.

The secretary reported: The amount s collected bv the agents for the past quarter for country area are as follow :—Takapau £3OB 13s Bd, Waipawa £36’2 19s. Otane £l‘26 0s lid. Onga Onga £lO6 19s. During the month £l5OO was placed on fixed deposit for three months. The amount of General Account monies earning interest temporarily is £3OOO. Since the last meeting of the board the two-monthly reading of meters in the Wnipukurau borough has taken place. The revenue lor this section of the hoard’s territory for the two months (exclusive of street lightin<A was £956 7s 10d. as against £431 17s 6d for the preceding two months The street light revenue for this period was £135 7s. so that the revenue in the Wainukurau borough for the four months was £1926 12s 4d. To this has to be added the £730 13s 7d outstanding nt the hewinninv of the financial vear The position, therefore is that the revenue for three readings is £2657 6s lid. Two of these readings were on peak winter demand but the estimates for the vear for th® Wainukurau borough. £1758, appear to be safe, as £2lOO 14s Id is reouired from the next three readings io come up to the estimates. To date there have been no further developments as to the- parental identity of the baby found on the verandah of the home of a local resident on Wednesday morning. Police inquiries are still being prosecuted. A well-attended quarterly summoned meeting of the Loyal Tavistock Lodge (Manchester Unity Oddfellows) was held on Thursday night, Bro. Gibson, N.G., occupying the chair. The principal business of the evening was that involving consideration of a notice of motion, tabled by P.O. Bro. L. Renner, to the effect that ladies be eligible for membership of the lodge. The proposal brought forward was seconded by P.G. Bro. T. Bruhn, and following upon a keen debate, was the subject of a ballot. This resulted in a very substantial majority being recorded in favour of the initiation of the gentler sex into the lodge and order, thus bringing Waipukurau into line with Takapau, Waipawa, Dannevirke, and other centres. where mixed lodges have proved successful.
